PM Modi applauds: 'Great To See' UPI launch at Eiffel Tower

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been formally introduced at the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, marking a significant step towards taking India's mobile-based payment system global, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi expressed his appreciation, stating, "Great to see this—it marks a significant step towards taking UPI global. This is a wonderful example of encouraging digital payments and fostering stronger ties."

The launch took place during the Republic Day reception in France, and the Indian Embassy highlighted that this initiative aligns with PM Modi's vision of globalizing UPI. India and France, in their joint statement in 2023, committed to building collaborations for a thriving digital ecosystem. NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and France's Lyra Collect entered into an agreement to implement UPI in France and Europe, facilitating seamless transactions and enhancing the payment experience for both Indian tourists and locals.

During his visit to France in July 2023, PM Modi announced the agreement to use the UPI payment mechanism, emphasizing that Indian tourists would be able to make payments in rupees, starting from the iconic Eiffel Tower. The integration of UPI at a global landmark signifies the continued progress of India's digital payment revolution on the international stage.
